Why Blog?

That’s the question I’ve been asking myself lately. I’ve been in a cooking and baking lull lately, what with working a lot and trying to cut back on my sugar consumption. So I haven’t had much to blog about lately and it’s given me time to ponder blogging. It’s kind of a weird thing if you think about it. I actually typed “why blog” into google to see why other people blogged. I came across a good list here.

I started blogging on allrecipes a couple of years ago and was hooked. While I get excited to see that I have a new follower or a comment on one of my posts here at blogger, I was never completely comfortable blogging on allrecipes. It made me nervous that so many people would see my posts. I’m not planning on renewing my supporting membership at allrecipes, so I’ve been making my transition to blogging here. For some reason, I’ve been enjoying it more and have even posted some of my blogs that I’ve written here on allrecipes too. I guess I want followers, but not too many! If that makes any sense. I have a nice little cozy corner here on blogger and people can come visit if they want to.

So if I’m not interested in starting a business, making money or being famous from blogging, then why do I do it? I’m such an introvert, it seems kind of contrary to my nature. I guess my reasons are more intrinsic. Here’s why I blog:

1. I like to write. I have so much going through my head all day, writing helps me sort it all out. I’m a thinker. I think a lot, almost too much. I’m constantly writing blogs in my head. Some of my “head blogs” actually make it to my “real blog” and I feel so much better after getting it out. I can stop thinking about it and do something else (or start writing the next blog in my head).

2. I like to share. I love recipes. When I find a great recipe I get excited and want to share it with other people. I also love coming up with my own recipes. What’s the point of writing recipes if I don’t have anyone to share them with? I also really love to take photos. When I take an awesome photo of a butterfly and flowers that I’m really proud of I want to share it.

3. I like to be creative. Food blogging is a very creative outlet for me. I love creating delicious food and taking photos of it. Food is my favorite subject to talk about and photograph, so this type of blog just comes naturally to me. I also had so much fun coming up with the layout and colors of this page that you are reading.

So there you have it. Why I blog. I like to write, share and be creative. It’s kind of like a diary or journal, only I’m sharing it with you!
So how about you? Why do you blog? And are you a blogging addict like I’m becoming?

  1. Dianne- I'm with you! Once I started blogging, I couldn't stop. For me, I do it because I like to simplify cooking for others. I know how much photos help me, and I figured step by step photos and instructions could help even the newest cook make a more complicated recipe. And I love food, so I get excited to share my finds 🙂 I love your blog- so I'm glad you like writing them!

  2. I am stuck…I love reading blogs, for the life of me I can't remember how I "found" you, I think it must have been one of your photos on AR that led me to your blog…but I really can't remember. Anywhooo, I love catching up on the archives and then checking in daily to see what's new. I've found other blogs based on your blog list and their blog list and then their blog list and on and on and on. I think I aspire to be a blogger, but feel I have nothing interesting to say, and no photo skills to speak of, so I live vicariously through all of you and dream of what I would write about if I did. 🙂 Really, I work, I love to cook but don't have the time, my hubby doesn't like sweets and I sure don't need to eat them myself, so what is there to write about….
Please keep writing your blog, it is the highlight of my day to see what new posts I can read on my blogger dashboard!

  3. I started to blog because I enjoy sharing what I am baking and the photos I take. It has since turned into other good things for me but those are just bonuses and not the reason why I do what I do. I haven't mentioned this anywhere yet, but AllRecipes is coming to my home in February to flim a "What's Cooking?" episode!

  4. Kathleen-I love your blog because you do make cooking look so much easier. When I made the champagne shrimp, I knew what to expect because I had already seen it!

  5. Lisa-Thanks for following my blog. I'm glad what I'm writing is being read by someone!

  6. Kelly-Congrats on your upcoming episode! AR sent me the email wondering I would be interested in filming, but I just wasn't. I'm not very "camera ready" and too self-critical. Didn't really want myself out there like that. You will be great, as you've already proven with your You Tube videos!

  7. Dianne, that is fantastic that they offered you an episode even thought you didn't want to do it. I feel fairly comfortable, but I am a bit anxious about it as well. I noticed in the previous episodes that they filmed in Minnesota a few times. I am glad that you share your recipes and photos! Looks like the official date is Feb. 10th for filming!

  8. How exciting Kelly! I'm so glad you accepted this opportunity with AllRecipes, I'm sure you will do just fine; I love all your videos. They did offer to me a few months ago as well, but just like Dianne, I'm not very good with cameras. Can’t wait to see your AR video! Dianne, I love your blogs, recipes and pictures. Your Spinach Basil Pesto is our favorite, I’ve made a couple a few times. Keep up your great work!

  9. I am with you Rose, the Spinach Basil Pesto is always in my fridge since I first tried the recipe. I wish I would have tried the recipe sooner.
