This Low FODMAP Sesame Chicken is so healthy and easy to make. It tastes almost as good as takeout when served with steamed rice and veggies!

Low FODMAP Sesame Chicken

I recently made this Healthy Sesame Chicken recipe from Food.com and thought it was so delicious. I had to share it, especially because all it took to make it low-FODMAP was one change: replacing the flour with gluten-free flour.

Sesame Chicken in Wok

I made a few additional changes, like cooking the chicken in canola oil (I’m not afraid of a little satiating and healthy fat!) and doubling the sesame oil (it is sesame chicken after all). I made sure to brown the chicken well because it adds so much flavor. I served it over rice and with some red bell pepper and broccoli florets. Enjoyed with some hot tea, it made a wonderfully balanced and nutritious meal. Try Low FODMAP Sesame Chicken it for lunch or dinner!

What makes this recipe an excellent low-FODMAP option?

  • The sauce is sweetened with plain old granulated sugar, which is usually tolerated well with those with IBS.
  • Chives are an excellent way to add onion flavor without the FODMAPs. If you don’t have chives, you could also use the green tops of scallions/green onions.
  • It makes a nutritious and complete meal when paired with rice (white or brown can be used) and steamed low-FODMAP vegetables such as broccoli florets, red bell pepper, or carrots.

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup gluten-free all-purpose flour blend
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 1/2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken breasts (cut into thin strips against the grain)
  • 2 tablespoons canola oil
  • 1/4 cup reduced-sodium soy sauce or gluten-free tamari
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons toasted sesame seeds
  • 1 teaspoon toasted sesame oil
  • 1/4 cup fresh chopped chives

Instructions

  • In a large resealable plastic bag, combine the flour blend, salt and pepper. Add the chicken breast strips and shake well to coat.
  • Heat the canola oil in a large non-stick wok or skillet over medium-high heat. Add the chicken and brown well, about 3 to 4 minutes a side.
  • Reduce heat to medium and transfer chicken to a plate and set aside. Add the soy sauce and sugar to the wok or skillet and stir and cook until sugar is dissolved. Stir in the sesame seeds and sesame oil. Add the chicken back into the pan and toss gently to coat. Remove from heat, stir in the chives and serve.

I don’t think I’ve ever left a review on a recipe, but this is one of the best things I’ve ever made. I thought it would be tasty, but it was truly delicious. I even prefer it to PF Chang’s! The butcher cut my chicken into stir fry strips, which saved lots of time. Thank you for sharing this recipe!

This is a great recipe. Not only is it straightforward, but the result is really delicious. I had chicken thighs on hand so used them – not as healthy, but by far the best low FODMAP meal I have had since on the diet. Thank you!

Honestly this is the best low-fodmap recipe I’ve made so far! I did use a little less sugar than the recipe called for and I cooked the chicken in garlic-infused olive oil (can’t live without that garlic taste) but I’m sure the recipe would be just as fantastic exactly as written. Thank you for this excellent dinner!
